Every developer on a serious codebase has Git. FileMaker teams never really did, until now. MakerLabs is our web-based version control platform that shows you exactly what changed between versions of a FileMaker solution, down to the last script line and field option.
The problem: FileMaker changes are invisible
If you build or maintain FileMaker systems, you know the quiet dread. Someone edits a script, tweaks a field's validation, changes a privilege set, and weeks later something breaks. What changed? Who changed it? When? In most FileMaker shops the honest answer is: nobody really knows.
Unlike modern code, a FileMaker solution doesn't hand you a clean history of every edit. There's no line-by-line diff, no commit log, no easy way to compare "version from March" with "version from June." You're left comparing files by hand, or trusting your memory. On systems that cannot go down, that's a real risk.
Every field, every option, every change — finally versioned, compared, and visible.
What MakerLabs is
MakerLabs is a web-based version control platform for FileMaker projects, built by ABAX. You feed it your FileMaker DDR (Database Design Report) XML exports, and it turns them into something you can actually read, compare and trust: a full, versioned history of your solution's structure and logic.
It's the tool we always wished existed while modernizing FileMaker systems for our own clients — so we built it. As we like to put it: comprehensive tools designed by FileMaker developers, for FileMaker developers.
What it lets you actually do
MakerLabs takes the parts of a FileMaker solution that are hardest to track and makes each one diff-able across versions:
Scripts, line by line. Compare scripts side-by-side with syntax highlighting and breadcrumb navigation. See differences in logic, parameters and structure instantly — perfect for inspecting long nested Let()s or conditional blocks. Track specific step changes like Sorts, Finds, Go To Layout, parameters and dialog settings.
Fields and schema. Track field changes, auto-enter options, validations and storage settings across versions. Detect indexed, global and secure storage — all versioned and compared.
Layouts and objects. Drill into each object's metadata: coordinates, dimensions, tooltips, names, types, and exactly what changed between versions.
Security and access. Audit accounts, privilege sets and extended privileges across versions. Know exactly who gained or lost access, and when accounts were added, removed, renamed or reassigned.
Triggers. View trigger type, script name and parameters, and how they shifted between versions.
The result is a single, honest source of truth: see every change, understand every impact.
Who it's for
MakerLabs is for the FileMaker professionals whose systems carry real weight — high-volume data, operational teams, integrations that have to work every single day. If a FileMaker review crosses your desk, if you inherited a solution nobody documented, or if you simply want to stop guessing what a "small change" really touched, this is built for you.
Your data stays yours
DDR files describe the guts of your business, so confidentiality is a primary design goal. Your DDR content and database metadata are treated as highly confidential — used strictly to analyze your solution and present results to you, never to train generalized AI models or shared with third parties for their own purposes. And for teams with the strictest requirements, MakerLabs can be installed behind your own firewall for total data sovereignty, integrating with your existing systems on your timetable.
FileMaker professionals who finally have complete visibility into their own systems — that's the whole point.
Why we built it
ABAX focuses on FileMaker systems that cannot go down. Over years of modernizing and reviewing those systems, one gap kept costing everyone time: the inability to see, precisely and quickly, what changed. MakerLabs closes that gap. It's the same discipline modern software teams take for granted — version history, diffs, audit trails — brought to the FileMaker world with the precision the platform deserves.
